The bark of a tree turned to opal after 160 million years.

 

The bark didn't literally become opal. This is called permineralization, a fossilization process in which minerals are deposited by water inside organic tissue, where they eventually form "casts".

This particular fossil was found in the Royal Peacock Opal Mine in Nevada.
